The sun slowly crept through the barred window, crawling onto the solitary bed. A little girl lay there, sleeping, she seemed almost peaceful, like her mind had not been disturbed in any way. Her eyes slowly fluttered open in the the warm morning light, she looked towards the locked metal door, it wasn’t open yet, phew. Not time. She slowly pulled her her legs over the side of the bed, stood up and slowly ambled towards the small dirty sink in the corner, she turned the tap, icey water flowed from its midst, she cupped her hands under the flow and splashed her face, slowly she looked up into the cracked mirror, a face appeared behind her, eyes crusted over, blood dripping from a wound in its head. A knife slowly rose from a scarred hand, it looked years old, rusted with the blood of previous kills. A swift movement from the hand sent the knife stabbing through the girls spine, and into her heart. A scream clawed it’s way out of her mouth, blood slowly trickled down her chin, her legs gave out from under her, she collapsed. She was now no more than a crumpled body.
-1 month later-
A little girl ran through the woods, dodging roots and trees, she ran straight towards the clearing. A small farmhouse stood in the centre, lined with blossom trees. The curtains flapped in the cool morning breeze, she ran towards them, her muddy hand reached down into a ripped pocket. Pulling out a old box of matches then she took one out, she lit it and stepped closer towards the flapping curtains, her arm reached towards the corner, the match lit it up, slowly the flames engulfed the curtains, and then beyond. She fell to her knees eyes wide in awe. The fire danced in her eyes, playing back what was in front of her. The house slowly became more engulfed in the growing flames, until the walls started to crumble, the second floor collapsed on top of the ground floor. Creating a cloud of dust and ash.
The large cloud of ash created some unwanted attention. The neighbors from 1km away drove quickly down to the house, they found the little girl sitting watching as the house burned to the ground. They looked towards her and then at the house, the man got on the phone to 911, 10 minutes later a police car came driving up through the woods, followed in quick succession by a fire truck but it arrived to late, the building was already a smoldering lump of burnt timber and ashes. The police officers jumped out of their squadron car and ran towards the girl, concerned for her safety, they picked her up under the arms and cuffed her hands, she struggled wildly against their grip. Kicking up dust from the ground, they dragged her towards their car and pushed her into the backseat. They slammed the door shut on her. The fire men started to put out the smoldering flames as the policemen drove away with the screaming and kicking girl in the backseat.
They arrived at the local Mental Asylum within 10 minutes, the tenders came running out the front door with a gurney in tow, they lined it up with the two policemen who were still struggling with the girl, they pushed her onto the gurney and tied down her arms and legs. She finally stopped trying to escape as she knew it was no use now. They pulled her behind them up a ramp and through the front doors into a grand entrance way. There was an elevator on the left. A big red rug in the middle and a desk on the right. All framed by stain glass windows and a giant staircase. They wheeled her into the elevator and pushed 4, they started to climb quickly; within a matter of seconds they had reached where they wanted to go.
The two men wheeled her out the door into a narrow cold corridor, a nurse walked up and leaned over the small terrified girl and assured her it was going to be OK, she took the gurney and wheeled it into an examination room where a young doctor was waiting. They unstrapped her after locking all the doors and windows. The young man asked what her name was, she replied shakily “Ivory Wilson” he noted it down on the pad which was sitting on the table in the corner; He then proceeded to weigh her, measure her height, take her temperature, blood pressure all the things that would happen at a normal doctors appointment, but then came the strange part, he began to strap her back down onto the gurney and he wheeled her back down the hall and around a corner she hadn’t seen before at the end of a short side corridor was a small room, smaller than the room she had just been examined in. There was a operating table in the middle of the room, suddenly Ivory started to sweat she hated hospitals. Her mother had died in one 4 years ago after a tragic car accident. They lifted her from the gurney onto the cold table, they gave her a small cloth and said to bite down on it; they proceeded to administer something that looked like a stethoscope onto her temples. It had cloth around the ends to make it stay in place. The young doctor turned around opened a draw in a dark cabinet and pulled out a strange machine.
He place the end of the cords attached to her temples into two sockets on the front of the machine and switched it on, there was a small knob on the right side that had what looked like voltages around it. The nurse assured her that this wouldn’t hurt a bit. But she was wrong, the man turned the little knob round a little bit and a sharp pain pulsed the her skull, he turned it further she clenched her fists in agony, her brain felt like it was going to explode. The pain started crawling down her spine and into her arms as the doctor turned it up a notch, it shooted down through her nerves she started to shake ‘When is this going to end she thought?’ the pain became worse as it continued to pulse down her body, it reached the top of her legs, she clenched the muscles tight in order to try and stop the pain, unfortunately it just made it worse, it slowly crawled down her legs and into her feet. By now Ivory was in so much pain she couldn’t hold in the ear piercing scream any longer. It exploded from her lungs like a bomb, it quickly filled the room causing the two people inside it to block their ears from the terrible noise, the doctor quickly turned off the machine and Ivory relaxed. Glad that it was over, the two leaned over her and picked her up and plonked her down onto the gurney. They wheeled her back up the side corridor and past the examination room. There were some double doors at the end of the corridor and the young man held up a barcode and the doors slipped slowly open, revealing the white glossy walls of the interior. They continued to wheel her past a large open space where several girls were sitting watching TV and looking outside. There were some more doors now, but this time they had chalkboards next to them, each room had a name on the chalkboard. They reached the furthest room, the nurse rubbed off a previous name “Chloe” and replaced it in a messy scrawl that said Ivory. They began to once again unstrap her from her gurney and pushed her into the small room. It had a solitary bed, a small sink in the corner with a cracked mirror above. The young man advised her to get some rest, Ivory walked towards the bed and lay down. Pulling the thin blanket over her bare legs. She instantly fell asleep.
The next morning Ivory woke from the subtle morning sunlight creeping through the window, she went to pull off the thin blanket and her hand found nothing, she crawled off the bed and onto the floor she couldn’t see it anywhere until she looked under the bed and pulled out her blanket...
She then noticed that there was some casual clothes placed at the foot of her bed. She slipped them on and went out the open door, the other girls were already in the common room, watching morning television and eating cereal. One girl was rocking back and forwards holding a worn teddy bear on the couch. Another was drawing the scenery of the dull grounds. And the final girl was sitting coldly at the dining table, playing with her cereal. I went and sat down next to her, she moved further towards the edge of the table. Taking her bowl with her, she acted as though I had some sort of contagious disease. I went and grabbed my bowl filled it with cereal, poured a little milk on top, went and sat down in a small arm chair facing the TV, there was a little kids show on.
